An interview with Jenni Morrison-Jack on the Ihana Yoga 200h Teacher Training

What inspired you to start offering Yoga teacher training here in Melbourne?

Yoga is my passion and sharing the practice and benefits of yoga is my calling. Since opening Ihana Yoga in 2012 I have witnessed the benefits of yoga and heard hundreds of success stories, so I wish to share our methods with future teachers to create a ripple effect of health, peace and happiness.

Why is anatomy a main focus of the training?

Whilst we appreciate that yoga is a life-style and a spiritual practice too, as long as we practise yoga as physical activity, we need to understand how the physical body works. Our training educates teachers who can accommodate to all ages as well as levels of experience, strength and flexibility.

What format is the teacher training offered in?

In 2020 we are offering our teacher training as a 1-month intensive full-time, as well as part-time options over 10 months and 6 months.

What can students expect to get out of this training?

The Ihana Yoga trainees will enter a learning
experience in a safe environment that encourages open-mindedness and ability to apply all the new information received in lectures. The students are invited to participate in the lectures by practising teaching yoga, giving and receiving feedback, sharing experiences, and asking questions. These “we’ve always been taught” moments are explored and workshopped in light of modern anatomical research, so that the trainees can question strict alignment rules. The course content also covers the origins and history of yoga; ancient literature and yoga philosophy.

How are the trainees supported throughout the course?

Our lecturers are approachable and offer on-going support during the training. Ihana trainees form strong bonds and meaningful friendships with like-minded fellow yogis, which happens quickly as we have a YTT Facebook group where trainees can connect and get to know each other, as well as share interesting articles, websites, material from the lectures, and ask questions. The trainees also receive a comprehensive training manual.

How does this training differ from other trainings offered in Melbourne?

After 8 years of lecturing at 3 different yoga schools and 6 different yoga teacher trainings, I’ve learnt from yoga students that the most common wish is to teach confidently at the end of the training. When we created our 200h YTT, our main goal was to keep it practical by designing the lectures to be interactive and hands-on. You’ll start practising yoga teaching from your second YTT weekend to guarantee you’ve had a lot of experience in a supportive environment before stepping out into the world of yoga teaching.

What kind of qualification will students receive at the end of this training?

At the successful completion of your studies, you can register with Yoga Alliance at the 200h level.
